Grease that Meets OEM Specs vs. Grease that Suits Your Equipment’s Needs

One of the most common grease specifications for off-road equipment is 3% or 5% Moly. Caterpillar lubrication specifications 5130 (7TJ & 5ZL), 5230 (7LL) and 994 (9YF) all call for 3% or 5% Moly grease. Many off-road equipment manufacturers have followed suit. The intention of these specifications was to supply equipment with a boundary type lubricant when pressures exceed the limits of the base oil viscosity. Many lubricant manufacturers have formulated grease that contains 3% or 5% Moly but have not addressed the maximum Extreme Pressure performance needed in these applications. Bel-Ray Performance Lubricants exceed the maximum Extreme Pressure requirements.

Extreme Pressure (EP) performance is tested by the 4-Ball EP Test, ASTM D2596. Lubricant is first placed between the 4 balls. The top bearing rotates while increased pressure “load” is applied to the bottom bearings. When the lubricant fails, the balls weld together. Generally, for a grease to be considered an EP it needs to have at least a 4-Ball EP Test performance of 200 kg or more. According to ASTM the maximum Extreme Pressure load is 800 kg.

There are several greases that meet the 5% Moly standard but how do they compare on the ASTM EP Test? Some lubricant manufacturers only score a 250 kg on the 4-Ball EP Test, and this is with 5% Moly. It is very common to see major oil company’s 3% and 5% Moly grease that have between a 300 kg and 500 kg rating on the 4-Ball EP Test. In the mining industry this level of Extreme Pressure performance may not keep your equipment safe from the rigors of day- to- day life at a mine. Even Caterpillar Desert Gold Grease only has a 4-Ball weld load of 620 kg. Bel-Ray produces two high performance greases that have 5% Moly; Bel-Ray Molylube 5% Moly Extreme Pressure Grease AC and Bel-Ray Molylube 5% Moly Extreme Pressure Grease LC.

The AC stands for aluminum complex, the LC for lithium complex. Both greases have Extreme Pressure properties and 5% Moly as required by many off-highway equipment manufacturers. The inherent properties of these thickeners and the proprietary chemical system utilized by Bel-Ray yield grease with exceptional mechanical and thermal stability, excellent anti-wear and Extreme Pressure properties, unsurpassed rust and corrosion protection and resistance to water.

Both of these exceptional greases boast a >800 kg load on the 4-ball test. Any 4-Ball weld value <800 kg means the grease failed during the test, whether at 250 kg or at 620 kg. Both Bel-Ray’s 5% Moly greases finished the test without welding.

Bel-Ray No-Tox Food Grade Products Excel

Bel-Ray recently completed a seven-month trial of the Bel-Ray No-Tox Food Grade

New Bel-Ray Food Grade
High Temperature Oil 220.

Waterproof Chain Lubricant Aerosol (64070) and the Bel-Ray No-Tox Food Grade High Temperature Oil 220 (62577). The Bel-Ray No-Tox Food Grade Waterproof Chain Lubricant Aerosol application was in a bakery on conveyors transporting bagels to Mondi Ovens and then to a freezer. The application for the Bel-Ray No-Tox Food Grade High Temperature Oil 220 was for the chains inside the Mondi Ovens. The end user of the finished product required Halal certification for all materials used in the baking process. Bel-Ray’s food grade lubricants Halal Certification List includes 224 product names covering all aspects of food and pharmaceutical equipment lubrication.

During the first three months of the trial, the Bel-Ray No-Tox Food Grade Waterproof Chain Lubricant consumption was reduced to one can versus four cans of the previous product in the same period of time. The conveyor chains showed no signs of corrosion and the lubricant was not affected by moisture.

four hours.

The Bel-Ray No-Tox Food Grade High Temperature Oil 220 is being applied to the side chains of the metal transfer belt that conveys the bagels through the Mondi Ovens. The oven temperature is around 240°C (464°F). Bel-Ray No-Tox Food Grade High Temperature Oil 220 is not adversely affected by exposure to this temperature and provides excellent lubrication to

the pins, bushings and sprockets of the chain. The picture to the right shows the results of a carbonization test of a competitor’s PAO 680 oil, on the left, and the Bel-Ray No-Tox Food Grade High Temperature Oil 220. One gram of each oil was exposed to 250°C (482°F) for four hours. As you can see, the competitor’s PAO 680 oil carbonized and the Bel-Ray Food Grade High Temperature Oil 220 was not affected.

The customer is very satisfied with the lubrication the Bel-Ray Food Grade High Temperature Oil 220 is providing the oven chains and the excellent performance the Bel-Ray No-Tox Food Grade Waterproof Chain Lube is providing the conveyors.

On changing over to Bel-Ray Halal approved food grade lubricants, the customer commented that he had peace of mind that Bel-Ray products worked well and that on audit he was covered with the Bel-Ray Halal Certification document.

Lubrication Myth Chaps My Hide!

I recently received a Sir Tech inquiry from a Harley-Davidson owner who was considering using a Bel-Ray Full Synthetic Ester 10W-50 engine oil. The customer was told by a mechanic that synthetics are too slick to allow bearings to roll, that they just turn on one spot and slide within the race.

I told him “you are another victim of synthetic oil lies and so is your H-D mechanic”... He probably heard it from someone he thought knew about lubricants and he has been spreading these lies unknowingly to customers like you. I dare you to contact someone at the H-D Motor

Company and have them verify for you the roller bearing bull or that you will void your warranty if you don’t use H-D oil. It won’t happen. The roller bearing myth is simply not true. When we heard it our chemists and engineers laughed for over a week, but we still did testing to prove it wrong. We even had an outside company test it and found that synthetic oil will not cause roller bearings to slip, spin or do anything they weren’t designed to do. Using a Bel-Ray Full Synthetic Ester motor oil will not void your factory warranty. This is another common myth that is widespread to put fear into H-D owners like you.

One other thing I love is the one about H-D engines being different… what are they using, nuclear power? Do they have emendator shafts? I apologize for my over-zealousness but this H-D myth stuff really chaps my hide.
