Bel-Ray NO-TOX® Lubricants

When one of the largest beef processors in the world tests their currently used bearing grease in the meat grinding department bearings and finds microbes, it’s time for a Bel-Ray No-Tox grease. Oil-based food grade lubricants are commonly used in the food processing industry in order to provide lubrication in bearings, gearboxes, pumps, hydraulic systems, agitators, etc. Although the lubricant is often inside a piece of machinery and is generally isolated from the exterior environment, food processing equipment is often subjected to severe caustic wash-down and sanitation procedures. Over time, water from the cleaning operations tends to migrate into the machinery (bearings, gearboxes, etc.) and comes in contact with the lubricant, forming a water and oil emulsion. Such water and oil emulsions can become fertile grounds for growth of bacteria, yeast and molds. It is possible that bacteria may metabolize in the lubricants and result in the formation or proliferation of these types of microbes.

  • Bel-Ray No-Tox products are not intended to destroy, deter, render harmless, prevent the action of, or otherwise exert a controlling effect on harmful organisms, but rather to be used as lubricants for the food industry machinery–they are not sterilizing agents themselves.

Silicone Used to Control Foam

Foam is a collection of tightly packed bubbles surrounded by a film of oil floating on the surface of an oil reservoir. Many times the foam is just cosmetic but should be treated if the condition causes safety problems by spilling out of the gearbox onto the floor or if the equipment is being lubricated with foam.

Silicone is the standard treatment for the control of foam in lubricating oils in the form of polydimethylolysiloxane. The method by which the silicone works to control foam is very simple, the silicone antifoamant contacts the surface of the oil bubble and spreads around the bubble thinning the bubble film until the bubble ruptures.

Silicones have very low surface tension and accumulate at the air/oil interface of the bubbles. The silicone material is insoluble in oil and very difficult to mix into the oil solution. To be most

effective the silicone particles must be less than 5 to 7 microns in size to ensure long-term foam protection. Silicone antifoamant works very well in turbulent systems as the turbulence causes the bubbles to collide with each other creating larger bubbles that rise to the surface where they rupture. Normally silicone antifoamant is present at concentration levels of only 5 to 10 parts per million.

Silicone additives can be added successfully to turbulent systems to correct foaming. However, they must be added correctly and only if the root cause of the foaming cannot be corrected.

The proper way to introduce silicone antifoamant is to mix the silicone into oil using a high shear mixer (blender) or it can be added very slowly into the turbulent section of the oil. It is not recommended to use silicone sprays because they tend to drop out of the oil.

Excessive silicone antifoamant can cause air entrainment problems in stagnant systems as the silicone is much denser than the surrounding oil and can cause the air bubbles to sink in the oil causing air entrainment. Excessive silicone may be introduced from excessive silicone sealant or from the interior of oil hoses that contain silicone spray that was used on the hose mandrels to attach the end fittings.

Contact your Bel-Ray Sales Representative to discuss any foaming issues before attempting to treat the condition. There are many conditions that can cause foaming; contamination, water, air leaks and high pressure. All of these need to be ruled out before additional silicone is added to a system.
