Bel-Ray and BBMX Kickoff the Supercross Season

January, 2010

January 11, 2010 – Bel-Ray and Butler Brothers Racing are teamed up for another great year of racing in the AMA Monster Energy Supercross Series which kicked off this year on January 9th, 2010 at the Anaheim Angels Stadium with a record attendance of over 40,000 fans. This is the third year that Bel-Ray has worked with BBMX as they teamed up with Palmetto Motorsports and are aboard the new fuel-injected Suzuki RMZ 250’s and 450’s.

Butler Brothers Racing team is made up of Jason “JT$” Thomas in the Premier Class (450cc), and Ben Evans, Robert Kiniry, Kyle Keylon and Lucas Crespi splitting the east and west series in the 250cc Lites Class. At A1 Shane jumped on a 450 to fill in for Jason Thomas who was busy overseas winning the German National Supercross Championship. Shane will ride the 450s until the East Lites Class starts up in 5 weeks in Atlanta, Georgia.

As the qualifying session completed, the BBMX team looked to be in contention. Bobby Kiniry took the top spot in his qualifying group, while Ben Evans picked it up in his session after a rough nontimed session. Shane Sewell rode well in his 450 qualifying session, placing 4th in his group. When the qualifying practice sessions were over, all three Suzuki/BBMX riders were in the night show. Bobby Kiniry and Ben Evans stepped it up and qualified in the Lites night show and Shane Sewell pulled the cord and qualified for the 450 class night show. The team was very impressed with the riding skills of the Indiana rider.

The start of the Lites Heat Race 1 would see BBMX rider Ben Evans on the gate. Ben would get a good start, but would go down in the first turn. He would re-mount in 16th and for the next 4 laps Ben would put in a charge up to the final transfer spot to 9th place. That would secure him a spot in the Lites Main. The second Lites Heat would have BBMX rider Bobby Kiniry charging his way into 2nd place after the first turn. Kiniry would make a few mistakes and fall back to 7th place where he would finish but was still able to secure a spot in the Lites Main. In the 450 class, BBMX rider Shane Sewell battled a back of the pack start and could only manage a 13th spot finish which would force him to ride in the Last Chance Qualifier (LCQ). In the LCQ he would finish a respectable 6th place, but his dream night would end there as he could not secure a spot in the main. Still, Sewell had a great ride tonight and the whole BBMX team commended him for his heart and dedication. The Lites Main didn’t start well for the BBMX riders, as Bobby Kiniry and Ben Evans would fall in the first lap of the race. Both would get back up and ride hard, with Kiniry mounting a charge from 19th to 13th spot where he finished. A banged up Evans would finish in 18th spot.

The series packs up and heads to Phoenix, Arizona on January 16th, where the BBMX Lites Team riders will be re-joined by Jason Thomas.
