There is a quick test to tell if a brake fluid is DOT 3 & 4 or DOT 5.  Water will mix with DOT 3 & 4 but will not mix with DOT 5. Here is how to test:

• Just take a few drops of the brake fluid and put it in a small container.
• Add a few drops of water and mix.

If the water mixes with the brake fluid, it is DOT 3 & 4. If the water does not mix with the brake fluid it is DOT 5. Also, DOT 3 & 4 is yellow/amber and DOT 5 is purple.
