Bel-Ray Sponsored Geico Team Tip To Change Your Clutch

The Bel-Ray sponsored TDI Racing Team has won several class championships, 3 AWRCS overall championships and placed in ISDE qualifications. Here is a great riding tip form the team!

As an off-road motorcycle rider, it is important to be able to change your clutch fast and efficiently, since sometimes this change happens in the pits or in the woods during a race. A simple trick we have discovered and a way to avoid losing more parts is to not remove your rear brake pedal, but instead spread the rear brake shoes open with a screwdriver. This will allow the rear brake to be pushed completely down and out of the way. Once the brake is pushed down, you can hold it down by sliding a number 8 tee handle into the main bolt for the motor, which is usually hollow on most bikes. The clutch cover can then easily be removed. When you are done, simply pump your rear brakes and get back to riding. This is a neat trick and saves a ton of time.

Other tid bits:
o Weight the outside (downhill) footpeg while traversing off-cambers
o To help prevent arm pump, relax your grip with your hands and try to grip the bike with your knees
o Cut diagonally across rutted fields; across the tops
o If you have to ride a rut, look ahead, not straight down in front of you always look for smooth lines, usually on the skirts of the main trail. It may not feel faster, but smoother = less energy expenditure
o Use a torque wrench! Every bike comes with torque specs in the manual – different parts, bolt sizes, dissimilar metals and suspension all require attention. The guys who designed the bikes are engineers, there’s a reason for the specs. Don’t torque plastic or seat bolts but take it easy, these bolts come in and out a lot
o If conditions are causing you to have trouble, chances are everyone else is experiencing it too... DON'T QUIT!!!
o Always have fun!
