AMA Supercross BBMX Update The Monster Energy/AMA Supercross Series stormed into San Diego, CA on February 6th. The weekend brought with it another storm that dropped a lot of rain but the Dirt Wurx crew has been working overtime to stay one step ahead of the weather. They had the track completed and tarped prior to the rain falling but the weekend moto gods are not looking too friendly upon us.
The BTOsports.com/Palmetto Suzuki/BBMX team riders Bobby Kiniry and Jason Thomas (JT) prepared themselves for the mudder. Kiniry is no stranger to mud, and was ready to do battle and improve on his San Francisco misfortunes. Jason Thomas 13th place finish last week in San Fran was better than his pair of 14th places. JT was pumped and ready to go for the race. Ben Evans was not in action as he is still recovering from his big get-off at Anaheim 2. Ben planned to be back for San Diego and Anaheim 3, but with the injuries still not healed up, decided it would be best to sit out the next two races and come back after the break in a month’s time.
The night started off with Bobby Kiniry blasting off the gate, but he went down in the first turn. Bobby got back up and mounted a charge into the 9th spot, which transferred him into the Lites Main Event.
Jason Thomas came off the gate in the 450 Heat #2, but did not get the start he needed. He finished one spot out and qualified in 10th place, forcing him to the LCQ. In which he started up front, inherited the lead, and never looked back. JT took the win in the LCQ which placed him in the main event.
Bobby Kiniry got off the gate in the Lites main event with a mid-pack start, but could not pull himself up from the middle. Kiniry moved up two spots to 13th position where he would finish the main event.
In the 450 main, JT rounded the first turn in 13th, but went down on the first lap. He got back up, but just didn't feel the same. What he didn’t know was that part of his forearm was missing. During the crash, JT caught his foot peg and it tore a huge hole in his left forearm. For the rest of the main, JT rode and finished 18th. After the race, JT rushed to the Asterisk Medical Center where he was treated.
“I didn't even know I lost a part of my arm,” said JT after being stitched up. “I knew something was wrong, but didn't realize it was that bad. I should be good to go for Anaheim 3 next weekend.”
With the teams still cleaning the mud off the bikes and packing up the race semis, the series heads back to Anaheim for the 3rd and final stop at Angels Stadium. It also is the last west coast round until Seattle in April. For the BBMX riders, Bobby Kiniry is going to be on it next week and JT is going to be stronger than ever, despite missing some skin on his forearm.
