One of the most critical lubrication applications in a baking facility is the oven chain. To meet the high temperature requirement of the oven chain, Bel-Ray is pleased to launch the new NSF H1 registered food grade, biodegradable, synthesized hindered polyol ester-based product for oven chain lubrication – Bel-Ray No-Tox Food Grade HighTemperature Oil 220 (62577). The NSF H1 registration number is 142894. Synthetic ester based oils have long been considered the best chemistry for high temperature applications but until recently there are not many such products on the market that could meet the NSF H1 food grade lubricant criteria. Beyond the bakery oven chain application, there are many oven chain applications that require high temperature synthetic ester lubricants. Those oven chain applications are core-oven trolley wheel bearings, oven and furnace exhaust fan bearings, calendar stack bearings, lithographing oven chains and sprockets, tenter frames, lehrs and glass forming equipment, paint bake ovens, ceramic curing ovens, fiberglass oven chains, etc.
As an ISO VG 220 synthetic oil, Bel-Ray No-Tox Food Grade HighTemperature Oil 220 is also suited for these applications,  spur, helical and planetary gear units, couplings, rolling and sliding bearings. The biodegradable feature of Bel-Ray No-Tox Food Grade HighTemperature Oil 220 makes it suitable where a biodegradable and non-toxic lubricants are  required.
Bel-Ray No-Tox Food Grade HighTemperature Oil 220 is designed to provide the following benefits and advantages:

  • Formulated with synthesized hindered polyol esters and performance additives.
  • A NSF H1 food grade lubricant – food safe, odorless, tasteless.
  • Contains EPA registered and FDA approved anti-microbial agents and effectively inhibits the growth of certain bacteria, yeast and mold in the lubricant.
  • Has over 65% biodegradability by ASTM D5864 (OECD 301B) test.
  • Rated as a CLP gear lubricant according to German DIN 51502 standard.
  • Performs well at temperature up to 260ºC (500ºF).
  • An ashless fluid that upon evaporation leaves no significant residues.
  • Non-carbonizing – contains no petroleum oil.No sludge or deposits left behind as with products containing molybdenum disulfide, graphite or other solid lubricants.
  • Does not contain any volatile organic compound (VOC).
  • Increased fire safety with very high flash and fire point.
  • Corrosion protection for both ferrous and non-ferrous metal.
  • Gives maximum lubrication protection with a minimum of consumption – extends lubrication cycles.
  • Lasts longer and goes further, while it outperforms • petroleum oil and other synthetic lubricants.

As an oven chain lubricant, Bel-Ray No-Tox Food Grade HighTemperature Oil 220 can be easily applied by methods of brush, oil feeder and automatic lubrication systems. When applied in automatic lubrication systems, the suggested lubrication method is applying the oil every day for 15 minutes. Due to the very low residue build-up and self-cleaning property of the Bel-Ray No-Tox Food Grade High Temperature Oil 220, there is no need for chain cleaning. This leads to savings on downtime since cleaning is no longer necessary. Lower friction and residue formation result in a reduction in oven chain amperage, which leads to a reduction and subsequent cost savings in energy consumption. The fact that there is no smoke generation helps to protect and enhance the working environment.
Bel-Ray conducted a comparison of the properties and performance of a competitor’s H1 220 oil which is the leading seller in the market. Results are shown in the table. Our findings were that:

  • Bel-Ray No-Tox Food Grade High Temperature Oil 220  has significantly better anti-wear properties than the competition as shown by the Falex Test results, meaning less wear and longer component life.
  • Bel-Ray product has much better viscosity-temperature profile and high Viscosity Index than the competition. The product with high VI ensures maximum performance over a wide operating range.
  • Although Bel-Ray product has slightly higher evaporation losses than the competition, loss 7.2% at 232ºC (450ºF) is considered low for high temperature lubricants.

Pricing against value will mean Bel-Ray will once again prove to be superior to the competition.
